Vedder Price Team Wins Significant Asylum Case for Pro Bono Client
Vedder Price is pleased to announce that a team of its attorneys has secured a significant pro bono victory resulting in a U.S. Immigration Court Judge in Chicago granting permanent asylum to one of the firm’s pro bono clients.
Our client fled Latin America after facing years of brutal domestic and gender-based violence and entered the United States in 2018.
The Vedder Price team engaged in significant fact gathering and legal briefing, and worked closely with the client to draft a detailed affidavit supporting her application for asylum. To further support the case, the Vedder Price team engaged an expert witness who submitted a report to the court validating the client’s fear of future persecution based on the conditions of the client’s home country, where gender-based discrimination and violence against women are pervasive.
“It was truly our privilege to assist our client after all she endured,” said Taylor McCann, a member of Vedder Price’s legal team. “As our client’s life and physical safety would have been at significant risk had she been forced to return to her home country, securing this victory was a relief, and we could not be happier with the result.”
The winning Vedder Price legal team consisted of Shareholder David Kane, Associates Taylor McCann and Sandy Chen, and Paralegal Gilda Avila. The team also worked closely with the National Immigrant Justice Center, a non-profit organization offering legal services for immigrants, refugees and asylum seekers.
