John K. Burke, an Associate in Vedder Price’s Chicago office and a member of Vedder Price’s Intellectual Property and Intellectual Property Litigation groups, regularly counsels clients in patent, trademark, copyright and trade secret matters, with a focus on intellectual property litigation, prosecution, and transactional matters.

Mr. Burke has represented clients in some of the most active patent and trademark litigation venues, including before U.S. district courts across the country and the International Trade Commission, as well as in patent and trademark challenges before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board, and the Patent Trial and Appeal Board. Mr. Burke has handled all aspects of patent and trademark litigation, including performing infringement and validity analyses, drafting and responding to discovery requests, briefing and arguing motions, and defending and examining expert witnesses during deposition and at trial.

Mr. Burke also advises clients on worldwide intellectual property prosecution and transaction issues. Mr. Burke is a licensed patent attorney and has prosecuted trademark applications and patent applications before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). He has drafted patent applications covering a variety of technologies, ranging from electrical and mechanical devices to software and business methods, with a particular focus on the fields of electrical engineering, software, and information systems. Mr. Burke regularly counsels clients on intellectual property issues involved in corporate deals such as financing transactions and mergers and acquisitions, as well as on monetizing intellectual property through licensing and sales agreements.

Mr. Burke has guest lectured on intellectual property topics at the University of Notre Dame, Northwestern University, and Chicago-Kent College of Law as well as at the Chicago Innovation Award’s “Practical Innovator” program.

Prior to law school, Mr. Burke spent three summers working at a major semiconductor manufacturer and obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering.
