James P. Looby is a Shareholder at Vedder Price’s Chicago office and a member of the firm’s Labor & Employment Practice Area.

Mr. Looby focuses his practice on high-stakes and complex employment cases throughout the United States, including matters involving wage and hour disputes, agency audits, independent contractor and joint employment issues, discrimination, and retaliation.

Mr. Looby has extensive experience advising his clients through all phases of litigation, from pre-suit allegations to post-judgment proceedings. Representative matters Mr. Looby has handled include those involving individual and nationwide class and collective action claims under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA), and similar state and local laws across the United States. He has also handled matters brought by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC).

Mr. Looby also frequently counsels companies regarding FLSA compliance, state wage and hour issues, and wage payment requirements, including managing complex compliance reviews and analyzing pay practices and policies for potential legal risk. Leveraging his litigation experience, Mr. Looby collaborates with clients to develop practical policies and practices, revise and implement payroll procedures and calculation methods, review position classification determinations, and coordinate messaging and training regarding changes to the workplace. Additionally, Mr. Looby routinely counsels clients on day-to-day employment issues, termination decisions, and related wage- and other-payment considerations.

Mr. Looby has represented clients across a variety of industries, such as those in the automotive, business services, gaming, financial services, food and beverage, pharmaceutical, retail, and telecommunications industries.

Mr. Looby previously served as law clerk to Judge William J. Bauer of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit and Judge Thomas M. Durkin of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. He also is a regular author, speaker, and presenter regarding class and collective action issues, ongoing legal developments and trends, legal risk mitigation and avoidance issues, and challenges companies often encounter as part of their legal compliance efforts.

In recognition of his exceptional client service, Mr. Looby was named to the 2022 edition of the Chicago Daily Law Bulletin’s 40 Under Forty – Illinois Attorneys to Watch list. Additionally, since 2022, Mr. Looby has been consecutively recognized by The Best Lawyers in America: Ones to Watch in the Litigation – Labor and Employment category for Chicago.
