John K. Burke, a Shareholder in Vedder Price’s Chicago office and a member of Vedder Price’s Intellectual Property and Intellectual Property Litigation groups, regularly counsels clients in patent, trademark, copyright and trade secret matters, with a focus on intellectual property litigation, prosecution, and transactional matters.

Mr. Burke is experienced with all phases of intellectual property litigation, from the temporary restraining order/injunction phase through trial and appeal and has represented clients in some of the most active patent and trademark litigation venues, including before U.S. district courts across the country and the International Trade Commission, as well as before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board, the Patent Trial and Appeal Board, and the Federal Circuit Court of Appeals. Mr. Burke frequently counsels clients on litigation avoidance and preparation, including providing infringement and validity analyses and opinions and advising on negotiations and alternative dispute resolution.

Mr. Burke regularly advises clients on worldwide intellectual property prosecution and transaction issues and counsels clients on developing, managing, and monetizing global intellectual property portfolios. Mr. Burke is a licensed patent attorney and has prosecuted trademark and patent applications before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). He has drafted patent applications covering a variety of technologies, ranging from electrical and mechanical devices to software and business methods, with a particular focus on the fields of electrical engineering, software, and information systems.

Mr. Burke also regularly counsels clients on intellectual property transactional issues arising in mergers and acquisitions, private equity and venture capital financings, joint ventures, and other corporate and business transactions, including performing intellectual property diligence into software and technology-based companies.  Mr. Burke frequently advises clients on monetizing intellectual property through licensing and sales agreements.

Since 2021, Mr. Burke has been recognized by The Best Lawyers in America: Ones to Watch in the field of Intellectual Property Law and since 2022 in the field of Litigation - Intellectual Property.

Mr. Burke speaks on a wide variety of intellectual property topics, including regularly guest lecturing at the University of Notre Dame, Northwestern University, and Chicago-Kent College of Law as well as at the Chicago Innovation Awards’ “Practical Innovator” program. Prior to law school, Mr. Burke spent three summers working at a major semiconductor manufacturer and obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering.
