Vedder Thinking | News Sam Tyfield Quoted in Futures & Options World
April 20, 2016
Partner Sam Tyfield recently commented on British regulators’ new initiative, the Financial Conduct Authority’s (FCA) sandbox development, in a Futures & Options World article. The virtual sandbox is a forward-thinking move by the FCA and can be seen as a “safe space,” says Mr. Tyfield, “meaning firms can discuss and test regtech proposals without fear of regulatory pushback.”
The commitment to technology and innovation in regulatory compliance is a key focus area for 2016 and 2017. The article describes how the FCA’s progressive approach to oversight is based on collaboration as opposed to fear. “When it comes to regulation and technology, everyone wants a level playing field,” said Mr. Tyfield. “However, the trouble is that a ‘level playing field’ means different things to different people: banks want regtech to be regulated and regtech thinks reg(ulators) should eliminate barriers to entry.” But this is a positive step and a welcoming development, “especially given the technical requirements under Mifid II,” adds Tyfield.
