Sam Tyfield is a Partner and a member of the firm’s Investment Services and Finance & Transactions groups.

Mr. Tyfield is a corporate and regulatory attorney who counsels clients across all industry sectors with a focus on the financial services industry. A majority of Mr. Tyfield’s clients are international, most with offices and operations in some or all of the United States, the European Union and the Middle East. He is experienced in related cross-border aspects of operating businesses with regulatory and compliance obligations across multiple jurisdictions. Mr. Tyfield has been Chief Operating Officer and General Counsel of an electronic trading firm. He is a member of the FIA eTrading Working Group and a number of other financial services industry non-legal working groups and committees dealing with electronic trading, systems and technology resilience and failures.

Mr. Tyfield’s broad range of financial services experience includes acting for a large number of proprietary trading firms and alternative investment asset managers, particularly those in the algorithmic trading space, and banks and brokers, advising them on a variety of business concerns, including mergers and acquisitions and, along with other members of the firm, litigation, enforcement and labor and employment issues. He assists clients in all aspects of planning for and the establishment and maintenance of secure IT systems and infrastructure and the related policies and procedures, including complex data and systems security, IP protection/loss and data privacy issues. Mr. Tyfield works closely with Chicago Shareholder Juan M. Arciniegas on all aspects of his clients' derivatives business.

His experience includes advising on numerous mergers and acquisitions, and serving as private equity and venture capital counsel in relation to European and international transactions. 

Mr. Tyfield has been recognized by the Legal 500 for his financial services work and praised for his “unique perspective on new regulations.” Additionally, he was named a European Legal Expert in the Legal Business directory for Private Equity, Corporate and M&A (2009) and Investment Funds (2012).

Mr. Tyfield has had numerous articles published on topics relating to hedge funds and asset managers, and he is a frequent speaker at seminars and events. He routinely provides updates on upcoming and relevant regulation, policies and procedures to industry organizations.
