Vedder Thinking | Events Elliot Cole Discusses Candidate Salary History Regulations on Talent Acquisition Interest Group Panel

Elliot G. Cole, an Associate in the Chicago office of Vedder Price and member of the firm’s Labor & Employment practice group, recently presented on a TalentRise panel on March 9, 2018, discussing the new salary inquiry laws and how to tread lightly during talent acquisition when it comes to candidates’ salary history. Asking candidates to reveal their previous income is becoming increasingly socially unacceptable and even illegal in many state jurisdictions. Mr. Cole and his panel sat down to share their perspectives on what recruiters and employers need to do to prepare for longer-term implications of this movement.
The panelists discussed the operational and systems implications of the new regulation; how to deal with unprompted compensation information given; how to roll out a national policy when not all states are required to comply; and the penalties proposed for violation in states where this is law among other topics.
