Vedder Price is pleased to announce that five attorneys have been named Shareholders in the firm, effective April 1, 2023.

Daniel C. Green, elevated from Associate and a member of the Litigation practice group in the New York office, represents clients in a wide variety of commercial litigation matters. He devotes a significant portion of his practice to the defense and counseling of accounting firms in both audit and tax-related contexts. He also has extensive experience representing private equity firms and their portfolio companies, and is a seasoned appellate practitioner. 

Green earned his law degree from Columbia Law School and his B.A. from Emory University, magna cum laude.

Patrick C. Johnston, elevated from Associate and a member of the Real Estate practice group in the Chicago office, focuses his legal practice on leasing, acquisitions, dispositions, real estate finance and construction matters. He has worked with a range of professionals, including developers, builders, architects, engineers, owners, end users and lenders. His expertise covers a wide variety of real estate and construction issues, and his practice includes work for real estate developers, contractors, designers, owners, lenders, borrowers, landlords and tenants. 

Prior to joining the firm, Johnston had a background in civil engineering and project management and draws on this experience regularly. Johnston earned his law degree from The John Marshall Law School and his B.S. from the University of Illinois.

Grant Kaiser, elevated from Associate and a member of the Tax practice group in the Chicago office, focuses his practice in the area of federal and state tax law and advises corporations, partnerships, limited liability companies and individual clients on a wide range of tax matters. He has extensive experience in taxable and nontaxable business acquisitions and restructurings, financing transactions, asset securitizations, executive compensation, state and local tax, and other complex business transactions. 

Prior to joining Vedder Price, Kaiser served as an Associate in the Mergers & Acquisitions Tax group at PricewaterhouseCoopers, LLP. In that role, he worked with multinational corporations, partnerships and other flow-through entities, hedge funds and private equity firms in the areas of federal and state tax due diligence, distressed company restructurings, post-merger integrations and tax planning for acquisitions and divestitures.

Mark C. Svalina, elevated from Associate and a member of the Financial Institutions Group in the firm’s Dallas office, advises banks, credit unions, captive finance companies and non-bank financial services companies on a broad range of corporate transactions. He is particularly experienced in mergers and acquisitions, corporate finance, corporate governance, cybersecurity initiatives, and regulatory and compliance matters. He advises clients on various regulatory matters, including new product and service rollouts, internal investigations, regulatory exams and enforcement actions by various federal and state regulatory agencies. He also advises clients on compliance with various federal and state banking and consumer finance statutes. 

He was selected as a “Rising Star” by Super Lawyers from 2020 to 2023. He obtained his LL.M. in Banking & Financial Law from Boston University School of Law, where he was first in his class and was awarded the Dennis S. Aronowitz Award for Academic Excellence in Banking and Financial Law.

Joel R. Thielen, elevated from Associate and a member of the Global Transportation Finance team in the firm’s Chicago office, focuses on aircraft and railcar finance and has significant experience representing commercial banks, finance companies, private equity funds, hedge funds and operating lessors in a variety of financing structures. He has also assisted investors in establishing strategic joint ventures and leasing and lending platforms for aviation and rail assets. In addition, Thielen advises clients on day-to-day matters, including corporate structuring, servicing and management agreements and general corporate law issues. 

From 2019 to 2022, Thielen was recommended by The Legal 500 United States guide in the Transport: Rail and Road – Finance category. He received his law degree from the DePaul University College of Law, and a B.B.A. from the University of Notre Dame, magna cum laude.
