Nicole J. Highland, Vedder Price attorney, has written an article titled "Drone Use Regulations Remain in Flux; Use Permits Are Still Required" for the February 23, 2015 edition of the Contractor Business Quarterly in Engineering News-Record. Ms. Highland explains the Federal Aviation Administration’s recent proposed rules for safely integrating commercial drones into civil airspace, which include, among other things, weight, altitude and speed requirements. However, the rules will not be law for up to two years. In the meantime, FAA exception permits are required to fly a drone for commercial purposes. As the rules relate to the construction industry, Ms. Highland advises, ". . . for now, contractors should prepare for yet another step to their permitting process and book spots for employees in the already popular drone flight classes."
