"There is both an art and a science to becoming a good lawyer."
Charles B. Wolf, "The Foundation of a Good Lawyer," Firm Leadership: Leading Lawyers on the Art and Science of Managing a Law Firm (Aspatore Books, 2003)

  • - Mr. Wolf is a shareholder in the Employee Benefits Practice and is a member of the firm’s Executive Committee.

We are a law firm where art and science not only coexist, but thrive—and all to the benefit of our attorneys and professional staff. History has taught us that art flourishes in an environment of personal freedom and intellectual challenge. We encourage lawyers, from the very beginning, to develop a legal practice that fulfills client needs and, just as importantly, is in tune with personal goals and aspirations. Our diverse areas of specialized legal practice, together with the high caliber of our clientele, provide a wide range of fascinating and professionally stimulating client assignments.

Summer Program

Our 2007 Summer Program ranked 2nd in Chicago and 8th in the Nation in The American Lawyer 2007 Summer Associate Survey. It provides a first-rate, exciting and ambitious look into the practice of law at Vedder Price. The program is our most valued source of new associates and we work hard to insure its success. Summer associates quickly integrate into the firm through substantive work assignments, observation opportunities, and training sessions specifically tailored to the many practice areas within the firm. Our dress code for the summer program and throughout the year is business casual.

Goals for the Summer Program

Our commitment to providing individualized support for every summer associate is demonstrated in our Summer Associate Advisor Program. Each summer associate is assigned to an associate who acts as his or her advisor, providing practical advice and guidance regarding the practice of law and general work-related issues.

Careful attention is paid to the progress of each summer associate. Every project the summer associate works on is evaluated by the assigning attorney. The summer associate is kept apprised of his or her performance throughout the program by means of regular evaluation and discussion sessions with assigning attorneys, the summer associate’s advisor, the program coordinators and our Manager of Associate Recruitment, Bo Y. Kim. Each summer associate has two formal review sessions: one at mid-summer and the other at the completion of the summer program.
