John J. Gresens joined the firm in 2007 as a shareholder in the Intellectual Property Group.  He enjoys an international patent practice, including cross-border legal representation designed to exploit new markets by means of patent protection, enforcement and licensing arrangements.

A graduate of St. John’s University (B.S., Chemistry, 1981) and the Hamline University School of Law (J.D., 1986), he has represented domestic clients abroad and foreign clients in the United States for more than 20 years.  As a trusted adviser in the Intellectual Property arena, he focuses on ways to help clients achieve significant leverage in both existing and new markets.  He has obtained hundreds of patents for his clients and has successfully represented clients in reexamination, reissue and interference proceedings in anticipation of, and during, litigation.  He provides clients technical expertise in the areas of Chemical Technology, Biotechnology, Pharmaceuticals, Nanotechnology and Mechanical Technology.

John is admitted to practice in Illinois in Minnesota, and before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal and District of Columbia Circuits as well as numerous other federal jurisdictions.  Since 1990, he has served as an adjunct professor of Intellectual Property Law at Hamline University School of Law.

He is an active member of a number of associations, including the American Bar Association, where he serves as a member of the Governing Council of the Intellectual Property Law Section and has served as chair of a number of committees, including the Committee on Interferences and the Committee on Patent Treaties; and the American Intellectual Property Law Association, where he served as a member of the editorial board for the AIPLA Quarterly Journal.  He is also a member of the Illinois State Bar Association; the Minnesota State Bar Association where he served as a member of the Board of Governors and the Minnesota Intellectual Property Law Association, where he is Past President.
