Jonathan E. Aberman is a Shareholder at Vedder Price and a member of the firm’s Corporate practice area and Corporate Reorganization, Bankruptcy and Insolvency practice group.
Mr. Aberman concentrates his practice in bankruptcy and insolvency-related matters. Mr. Aberman primarily represents lenders, equipment financiers/lessors and other secured creditors in bankruptcy cases and insolvency proceedings. In addition, Mr. Aberman has represented companies, creditors, chapter 7 and 11 trustees, unsecured creditors and unsecured creditors’ committees in numerous bankruptcy reorganizations and liquidations. Mr. Aberman has also represented court-appointed receivers and assignees for the benefit of creditors and has experience in US state court mortgage foreclosure actions and receiverships and out-of-court restructurings and liquidations. Mr. Aberman’s experience encompasses all aspects of the bankruptcy litigation process, including debtor-in-possession financing, adequate protection disputes, section 363 auctions and asset sales, chapter 11 plan formation and confirmation, claims disputes, preference actions and fraudulent transfer actions.
Mr. Aberman is a frequent speaker and lecturer on numerous bankruptcy-related topics and issues. Mr. Aberman recently spoke on "Growth Through Acquisition of Distressed Assets" at the Third Annual "Working with Private Equity Groups" program sponsored by the University of Chicago Booth School of Business, and he spoke on "Identifying M&A Opportunities in the Distressed Marketplace" for the M&A Source webinar "M&A Opportunities with Distressed Companies." Mr. Aberman also lectured on "Bankruptcy 101 for Lenders" as part of a presentation entitled "Troubled Companies—A Business Bankruptcy Primer" for business school students at the University of Chicago.
Mr. Aberman’s publications include "Creditors’ Committees Under the Microscope—Recent Developments Highlight Hazards of Self-Dealing," ABI Journal, September 2007 (co-author).
Prior to shifting his focus to bankruptcy in 2000, Mr. Aberman represented international insurers in complex insurance coverage litigation cases.
Mr. Aberman currently serves as Co-President of the Board of Directors of Chicago’s Collaboraction Theater Company, a nonprofit arts organization. Mr. Aberman has also represented artists pro bono through Lawyers for the Creative Arts.
Mr. Aberman was selected for inclusion in 2012 Illinois Rising Stars.
