Smitha B. Uthaman, Ph.D. is a patent agent in the New York office of Vedder Price.

Dr. Uthaman works on aspects of patent prosecution and litigation involving technologies related to the life sciences, with particular emphasis on molecular and cellular biology, immunology, biochemistry and biotechnology.

Dr. Uthaman completed her B.Tech. with honors in Biotechnology and Biochemical engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, India.  She received her Ph.D. in Molecular and Cellular Biology at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.  Dr. Uthaman’s doctoral research focused on Neuroscience, in understanding the molecular basis of central synapse formation.  Her dissertation centered on the characterization of the Drosophila ubiquitin conjugase Bendless and its downstream interacting partners.  Her work has been published in peer-reviewed scientific journals and has been presented at major scientific conferences.  She was also an Isenberg scholar at the Isenberg School of Management at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.

Prior to attending graduate school, Dr. Uthaman was a junior field engineer in the Wireline segment of Schlumberger Inc., an oilfield services company.
