Joseph T. Cygan joined Vedder Price in 2008 as an associate and a member of the firm’s Intellectual Property Group.
Prior to entering into private practice, Mr. Cygan was in-house patent counsel with the law department of Motorola, Inc. Since becoming a patent agent in 2002, Mr. Cygan has prepared and prosecuted patent applications related to numerous wireless technologies and related technology standards including; Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM), General Packet Radio Service (GPRS), Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution (EDGE), Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS), Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA), CDMA2000, Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexed (OFDM) systems, IEEE 802.11, IEEE 802.16 and BluetoothTM. Mr. Cygan also has patent experience related to Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP), Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) and various other telecommunications protocols and standards.
Prior to engaging in patent related work at Motorola, Inc., Mr. Cygan held the positions of Senior Systems Engineer and Technical Proposal Manager and gained extensive engineering experience related to wireless telecommunications networks and systems. Mr. Cygan designed and presented several GSM network expansions for network operators serving the Middle East market, and prepared traffic analysis, Radio Frequency (RF) propagation simulations, frequency plans, and network infrastructure expansion plans, seeing the designs through to installation and operation.
Mr. Cygan also worked for the engineering consulting firm, Sargent and Lundy, LLC for five years, designing electrical power distribution systems and related substation and power plant control systems including; Gas Insulated Substations (GIS), Supervisory and Data Acquisition (SCADA) retrofits, power generator protection systems, power line carrier systems, and various power line and substation relay protection and control systems.
