Michael J. Waters is an Associate with Vedder Price and a member of the firm’s Litigation practice area. Mr. Waters has experience representing clients in a broad range of complex business and commercial disputes, including product liability, securities fraud, antitrust and trade regulation and contract disputes.
Mr. Waters also regularly works with the firm’s Intellectual Property group and has significant experience litigating matters of trademark, copyright and patent infringement, as well as trade secret misappropriation, unfair competition and restrictive covenant claims.
Mr. Waters has experience handling all phases of litigation, from emergency injunctions through trial and appeal. He has appeared and successfully argued in both state and federal appellate court, and has participated in arbitrations before the American Arbitration Association and Financial Industry Regulatory Authority. He is also a contributing author for the 2009 edition of the Illinois Institute for Continuing Legal Education Civil Trial Evidence handbook.
Mr. Waters additionally counsels all industry sectors in connection with the retention and management of electronic and hard copy data and records. This includes counseling clients on privacy and data security issues and assisting clients in preparing for and responding to data security breaches, as well as advising clients on eDiscovery issues. Mr. Waters’ articles on these topics have appeared in Antitrust, Privacy & Data Security Law Journal and The Illinois Manufacturer.
In addition to his activities on behalf of Vedder Price and its clients, Mr. Waters has volunteered his time to provide legal services to children and in support of children's issues in conjunction with the Children and Family Justice Center of the Northwestern University School of Law's Bluhm Legal Clinic.
Mr. Waters was selected for inclusion from 2009 to 2012 in Illinois Rising Stars.
