ISBA Recognizes Vedder Price Shareholder for Pro Bono Work
Michael R. Mulcahy, a shareholder with the law firm of Vedder Price P.C. and a member of the firm’s Commercial Litigation Group, will be honored by the Illinois State Bar Association and the Standing Committee on Delivery of Legal Services at its Annual Meeting Awards Luncheon on Friday, June 27, 2008. Mr. Mulcahy is the recipient of the 2007-2008 John C. McAndrews Pro Bono Service Award, which recognizes his pro bono efforts in the category of outstanding individual.

He shows a tremendous commitment to pro bono and is a shining example of how one can achieve success as a lawyer and continue to help those less privileged and in need.”
Mr. Mulcahy works closely with the Children and Family Justice Center of Northwestern University School of Law’s Bluhm Legal Clinic, which named him as 2005 Pro Bono Attorney of the Year. The Children and Family Justice Center (CFJC) is a comprehensive children's law center where law students, under the supervision of attorneys and clinical professors, represent young people on matters of delinquency and crime, family violence, school discipline, health and disability, and immigration and asylum. They collaborate with communities and child welfare, educational, mental health and juvenile justice systems to develop fair and effective policies and solutions for reform.
His pro bono representation over the past twelve months has included work on the following matters: In re Estate of Amia Sade Boyd (acting as guardian ad litem); In re X.O., a Minor, In re T.B., a Minor, In re T.H., a Minor, In re C.C., a Minor, and In re J.M., a Minor (acting as counsel for minor in juvenile delinquency proceedings); People v. Jorge Aguilera Flores (acting as counsel for applicant for asylum with respect to criminal charges); Winford Bryant v. Illinois Department of Corrections (acting as counsel for inmate in civil rights litigation); In re Petition for Emancipation of Steven Skurnicki (acting as counsel for minor in support of his petition for emancipation); Board of Education of the City of Chicago v. M.S., Board of Education of the City of Chicago v. A.H., and Board of Education of the City of Chicago v. C.E. (acting as counsel for minor with respect to school expulsion proceedings).
At Vedder Price, Mr. Mulcahy serves as Chair of the firm’s Pro Bono Committee, and maintains a trial and counseling practice covering a broad range of substantive issues in both state and federal courts throughout the country. He has significant experience in complex commercial and financial institution litigation involving breach of contract, business torts, mortgage fraud, shareholder disputes, real estate and trust disputes, bankruptcy and corporate reorganizations.
Mr. Mulcahy regularly counsels clients in litigation avoidance and is skilled in the use of alternative dispute resolution techniques, including negotiation, mediation and arbitration. Before entering private practice, he spent four years as a prosecutor and defense counsel in the United States Marine Corps and is a Major in the United States Marine Corps Reserves. Mr. Mulcahy is an Adjunct Professor in Trial Advocacy at Northwestern University School of Law.
