Authors: Erin C. Veazey
Laura Sack, Shareholder with Vedder Price’s Labor and Employment group, was mentioned recently in “Social Media Forum: Worker privacy rights on company computers discussed” by Cornell University’s ILR News Center.
The article profiled the issues examined in the panel discussion, “The Internet and Social Networking Sites: Treasure Trove of Information or Minefield?” which was held during Cornell ILR’s Labor and Employment Law Program at the Cornell ILR Conference Center in New York on February 11, 2011. Vedder Price co-sponsored the event.
Sack, who was a member of the panel, commented on employees’ privacy rights in relation to the use of employer-provided communication devices, saying that “Once the employer has alerted employees, preferably in a social media policy, the employer is fully entitled to access content on these devices.” Sack also addressed related issues during the panel discussion, including employee misuse of social media, employer monitoring of employee social media use, and the use of social media by employers during the hiring process.
